Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, known for his love of cannabis, has had to put his marijuana habit on hold for his upcoming fight against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. This is due to Texas regulations that prohibit the use of marijuana in combat sports.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) mandates drug testing for all fighters, including pre-fight and post-fight screenings for banned substances. Marijuana falls under this category, with a failed test resulting in a 90-day suspension and a fine.
While Tyson typically incorporates cannabis into his lifestyle, including his own strain and his podcast, “Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson,” the regulations in Texas have forced him to abstain.
However, the tide may be turning for marijuana legalization in the state. Dallas County voters have expressed strong support for decriminalizing the drug, and recent legislation has allowed the production and sale of hemp products containing CBD.
Despite these developments, Tyson’s fight against Paul will take place under the current regulations, forcing the boxing legend to forgo his usual cannabis consumption.
The fight, which is expected to be streamed live on Netflix, will take place on Friday, November 15th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
