Fri Nov 15 15:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Mild Start, But Winter Could Turn Active: KOMU 8 First Alert Weather Team Predicts Typical La Niña Winter for Mid-Missouri
**COLUMBIA, MO** – While last winter was the third warmest on record, the KOMU 8 First Alert Weather Team predicts a more typical La Niña winter for Mid-Missouri this year. This means a potential for a mild start, but with an increase in activity and temperature swings as we move into January and February.
Chief Meteorologist Matt Beckwith explains that a weak La Niña pattern is expected to develop, which usually brings warm and dry conditions to the south, while northern areas experience wetter weather. Mid-Missouri sits in the middle, making it a “battle zone” for weather patterns.
While overall snowfall is predicted to be average to slightly below average, with an estimated 10-15 inches for the season, there could be a higher chance of mixed precipitation and icing events due to the expected temperature swings.
“We should expect more frequent changes and temperature swings,” says Beckwith. “These swings will likely put us at an increased risk of mixed precipitation and icing events, with a lower chance of ‘pure’ snow events.”
