Kiernan Shipka, known for her role as Sally Draper in the hit series “Mad Men,” recently revealed that she was aware of the show’s adult content despite efforts to shield her from it.
Speaking on the “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, Shipka, who began acting on the show at the age of six, shared that she remembers nearly everything from her time filming. “I always knew what I was reacting to. Like, I always knew what [my character] was walking in on. I just didn’t have to see it over and over again,” she explained. Shipka also admitted to feeling “mature” and “like an adult” on set, leading her to believe she could handle the show’s content.
Despite being aware of the adult themes, Shipka wasn’t allowed to watch most of the show’s episodes as a child. However, she finally watched the entire series during the COVID-19 pandemic and found it to be an eye-opening experience. She realized she understood her character’s emotions and struggles in a more nuanced way as an adult.
Shipka’s revelations offer a unique perspective on the experience of a young actor on a show with mature themes. While she acknowledges the producers’ efforts to protect her, she also demonstrates an impressive level of understanding for a child actor navigating the complex world of “Mad Men.”
