Fri Nov 15 04:08:57 UTC 2024: ## “Kanguva” Disappoints: Suriya’s Ambitious Fantasy Fails to Take Flight
Despite high expectations and a star-studded cast, Suriya’s latest film “Kanguva” has fallen short of its ambitious goals. While the film attempted to blend past and present timelines with action and fantasy elements, critics have deemed it a missed opportunity.
The story follows Francis (Suriya), a bounty hunter in 2024, who is mysteriously connected to a thousand-year-old prince named Kanga (also played by Suriya). The film oscillates between these two timelines, with Kanga facing conflict and power struggles in his village, Perumachi.
Director Siruthai Siva’s vision for “Kanguva” is ambitious, but the execution leaves much to be desired. Critics have pointed out that the initial 20 minutes of the film, set in the present day, lack focus and fail to establish a strong narrative. The film picks up pace with the period portions, drawing inspiration from the popular “Magadheera,” but ultimately falls short in delivering on its promises.
The screenplay is deemed incoherent and messy, with inconsistent use of language in the period portions and a lack of depth in character development. While Suriya delivers a strong performance, Bobby Deol’s portrayal of the menacing Udhiran feels underdeveloped, and Disha Patani’s role remains underwhelming.
Despite stunning visuals by Vetri Palanisamy, the film suffers from an overreliance on loud action sequences, excessive dialogue, and a relentless background score. The film’s pacing and inconsistent storytelling have left audiences wanting more, with the final product failing to capture the epic scale it aimed for.
While the film’s ending hints at a potential sequel, critics question whether every film needs a sequel and whether the underlying story of “Kanguva” truly warrants one. Overall, “Kanguva” is considered a missed opportunity, with its ambitious ideas ultimately failing to translate into a captivating and engaging cinematic experience.
