**Chennai, November 15**: Tamil superstar Suriya’s much-anticipated fantasy action drama, *Kanguva*, opened to a mixed reception and moderate box office numbers on its release day. Despite an initial delay in early morning shows due to technical glitches, the film is estimated to have earned approximately ₹40 crore globally.
While *Kanguva* garnered decent opening numbers, the film’s performance has fallen short of expectations. According to tracking website Sacnilk, the film managed to rake in approximately ₹22 crore nett at the domestic box office on its first day. This is considered ordinary for a film of this magnitude, especially considering its release on a record number of screens worldwide.
The film’s Tamil version recorded an occupancy of 37.25 per cent on November 14, while the Hindi version struggled with a mere 11.47 per cent occupancy. Despite aggressive promotion in Mumbai targeting the Hindi belt for pan-India success, the film’s lukewarm response suggests it might struggle to find an audience in the North.
The advance booking in Kerala had been promising, with *Kanguva* reportedly earning over ₹4 crore in the region. However, the overall opening performance indicates that the film might face an uphill battle to recover its estimated ₹300 crore production cost.
*Kanguva*, written and directed by Siva, features Suriya in dual roles alongside Disha Patani, Bobby Deol, and an ensemble supporting cast. The film boasts impressive visuals and a captivating storyline but has received a mixed response from critics and audiences alike. It remains to be seen whether the film will be able to overcome the initial lukewarm response and gain momentum in the coming weeks.
