Fri Nov 15 02:56:15 UTC 2024: ## Astronaut Sunita Williams Extends Space Station Stay to Nearly 8 Months

**Houston, Texas -** Astronaut Sunita Williams’s mission to the International Space Station (ISS) has taken an unexpected turn, with her stay being extended to nearly eight months due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Originally planned for a brief eight-day trip, Williams’s mission now stretches to approximately 240 days.

Williams, who launched on June 5th, 2024, is now expected to return to Earth in February 2025, instead of the originally planned short stay. Despite the extended stay, Williams remains enthusiastic about her time on the ISS, describing it as her “happy place.”

During her extended stay, Williams has taken command of the ISS for the second time in her career. She and her crewmate Barry Wilmore, part of the Expedition 71/72 crew, are responsible for overseeing various operations and research activities on the station. Williams is engaged in routine maintenance tasks and conducting a variety of scientific experiments.

Her return to Earth will be aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft as part of the Crew-9 mission. This extended mission will significantly add to Williams’s already impressive total time in space, which previously stood at 322 days.

Williams has continued to engage with the public throughout her extended stay, participating in press conferences and sharing her experiences from the ISS. Her extended mission provides an invaluable opportunity for scientific research and showcases the resilience of space exploration in the face of unforeseen challenges.
