Fri Nov 15 00:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Oliveira Confident in Second Win Over Chandler, While Chandler Eyes Title Shot

**NEW YORK** – Former champion Charles Oliveira is confident he will defeat Michael Chandler for the second time at UFC 309, dismissing Chandler’s claim that a victory would put him in line for a title shot. The two lightweights will clash in the co-main event at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Oliveira, who lost the lightweight title after failing to make weight for a title defense against Justin Gaethje, emphasizes that he is focused on the present fight and determined to improve upon his previous victory over Chandler. “That one has passed. We’re focused on this one right now,” Oliveira said through an interpreter at the UFC 309 media day. “That was experience. He’s trying to prove he can beat me. I’m trying to prove I can beat him again. Let’s put that in the past and focus on this one.”

Chandler, on the other hand, believes a win would solidify his position as the next contender for the title currently held by Islam Makhachev. However, Oliveira points to his past victory and his continuous improvement as reasons for his confidence in securing a second win.

The oddsmakers favor Oliveira, who is returning to the Octagon after a lengthy layoff. Chandler’s last victory came in May 2022 against Tony Ferguson.

“He wants to be a champion for the first time. I want to be the champion again,” Oliveira declared. “The champion of the lightweight division has a name – we know this. I beat Michael Chandler once. I’m going to beat Michael Chandler again.”

While Chandler is looking ahead to a title shot, Oliveira’s focus remains on the present, emphasizing his commitment to continuous improvement and his desire to prove himself once again against Chandler. The fight promises to be a thrilling rematch with high stakes for both fighters.
