**SALT LAKE CITY** – A man has been arrested in connection with an incident at last weekend’s University of Utah football game where a BYU cheerleader was injured by a thrown bottle.
William Gardner, 18, was charged with assault, a Class A misdemeanor, after allegedly throwing the bottle that struck Jocelyn Allan on the sidelines of Rice-Eccles Stadium. According to authorities, Gardner is not a student at the University of Utah.
A video of the incident, captured by Jessica Hellewell, shows the cheerleaders standing near the corner of the stadium when a bottle suddenly appears and hits Allan in the head, causing her to lose consciousness.
The arrest documents state that Gardner was at the game with his family in a suite. It was Gardner’s father who contacted University of Utah Police the following day and identified his son as the person who threw the bottle.
The incident occurred during the highly anticipated rivalry game between BYU and Utah, which BYU ultimately won with a last-second field goal.
