Fri Nov 15 04:30:00 UTC 2024: ## “The Sabarmati Report” Released, Explores 2002 Godhra Train Tragedy

The film “The Sabarmati Report,” starring Vikrant Massey, Riddhi Dogra, and Rasika Dugal, has been released. The crime-thriller, clocking in at 2 hours and 3 minutes, delves into the controversial Godhra train burning incident of 2002.

The film attempts to uncover the truth behind the incident, focusing on the fire that erupted in the S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express on February 27, 2002, leading to the death of 59 kar sevaks.

The story centers around Sammer Kumar (Vikrant Massey), a Hindi journalist who struggles to expose the real truth. While initially perceived as inferior by his English-speaking counterparts, Sammer gets his chance when he is assigned to cover the Godhra incident alongside the prominent English news anchor Manika (Riddhi Dogra).

However, Sammer is shocked when Manika, under pressure from her superiors, presents a fabricated report, twisting the narrative. Determined to uncover the truth, Sammer prepares his own report, only to be fired and falsely accused of theft, landing him in jail.

The film chronicles Sammer’s struggles as he navigates joblessness, alcoholism, and social alienation. Meanwhile, the channel executives and Manika are haunted by the fear of the truth emerging after the release of the Nanavati Commission report. Manika sends a new reporter, Amrita (Rasika Dugal), to Godhra to reinforce her fabricated narrative.

Amrita, however, stumbles upon Sammer’s video footage and is moved by the truth it reveals. Together, they expose the tragic reality of the Godhra incident and bring justice to the 59 innocent victims.

While Vikrant Massey delivers a powerful performance as Sammer Kumar, effectively portraying his struggles and determination, Riddhi Dogra’s portrayal of the manipulative Manika is also noteworthy. Rasika Dugal’s performance as Amrita is competent but feels somewhat underdeveloped in certain scenes.

The film’s direction by Dheeraj Sarna focuses on a sensitive topic but suffers from pacing issues and an uneven storyline in the first half. The second half offers more intrigue, but the climax feels underwhelming. Though aiming to reveal the truth, the film doesn’t offer much new information beyond what has already been reported in the media.

“The Sabarmati Report” is a film that can be appreciated by audiences seeking a cinematic exploration of the Godhra incident. However, the film falls short in its portrayal of the subject. While some flaws in its story and presentation exist, Vikrant Massey and Riddhi Dogra’s performances make it worth a watch.
