Dambulla, Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka secured a convincing 45-run victory over New Zealand in a rain-affected first ODI on Wednesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The match, which was shortened due to rain, saw Sri Lanka post an impressive 220/3 in 27 overs, with Kusal Mendis smashing a century (143 runs) and sharing a mammoth 206-run partnership with Avishka Fernando.
New Zealand’s chase got off to a strong start with openers Will Young and debutant Tim Robinson putting on 88 runs for the first wicket. However, a dramatic collapse after the drinks break saw them lose five wickets for just 22 runs, leaving them struggling at 110/5. Despite Michael Bracewell’s valiant effort of 34 runs, New Zealand ultimately fell short of the revised target, finishing on 175/9.
Maheesh Theekshana was the architect of New Zealand’s downfall, claiming the crucial wickets of both openers in the same over, while Charith Asalanka also chipped in with two wickets. Dilshan Madushanka, who picked up three wickets, finished the match with a crucial dismissal of Jacob Duffy.
Speaking after the match, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka praised his team’s bowling performance, particularly highlighting the impact of Theekshana and Madushanka. Meanwhile, New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner expressed disappointment with the team’s performance, acknowledging that losing wickets in clusters hampered their chances of victory.
Kusal Mendis was named Player of the Match for his outstanding innings, which also set a new record for the highest individual score by a Sri Lankan batter against New Zealand in ODIs.
The two teams will now head to Pallekele for the next two ODIs, with the second match scheduled for Sunday, November 17.
