Thu Nov 14 14:49:24 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Dominate Rain-Hit ODI, Mendis & Fernando Smash Centuries

**Dambulla, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lanka secured a resounding 45-run victory over New Zealand in a rain-affected first ODI on Wednesday, with Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando smashing centuries.

Mendis, the Man of the Match, achieved a career-best 143 off 128 balls, while Fernando reached his first ODI century in three years with a knock of 100 off 115 balls. The duo’s 206-run second-wicket partnership propelled Sri Lanka to a formidable 324-5 in 49.2 overs before rain intervened, reducing New Zealand’s target to 221 in 27 overs under the DLS method.

Despite a promising start with a 88-run opening stand from Will Young (48) and Tim Robinson (35), New Zealand’s chase was derailed by Sri Lanka’s spinners. Maheesh Theekshana (2-32) and captain Charith Asalanka (2-15) were particularly effective, while Dilshan Madushanka (3-39) added further pressure in the latter stages. The Black Caps were ultimately restricted to 175-9, handing Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Mendis and Fernando’s brilliance overshadowed a promising start from New Zealand’s debutants, Robinson and Nathan Smith. However, Sri Lanka’s spinners proved too strong, ultimately paving the way for a comfortable win.

The second and third ODIs will take place in Pallekele on Sunday and Tuesday respectively.
