Thu Nov 14 11:16:37 UTC 2024: ## Independent Candidate Arrested for Assaulting SDM during Rajasthan By-Election
**Tonk, Rajasthan:** Naresh Meena, an independent candidate in the Deoli-Uniyara assembly by-election, was arrested on Thursday after a violent incident during the voting process. Meena had assaulted the SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) on Wednesday, leading to widespread chaos and clashes between police and locals.
The incident occurred in Samraavta village where Meena allegedly slapped the SDM. This sparked outrage among villagers, who then attempted to disrupt the voting process and prevent polling parties from leaving. The situation escalated rapidly as villagers threw stones at police, forcing them to use tear gas to disperse the crowd. The violence resulted in significant property damage, including the destruction of the SP’s vehicle.
Police had initially detained Meena on Wednesday night, but he was subsequently released after his supporters surrounded the police station and demanded his release. Meena went into hiding before appearing at Samraavta village on Thursday morning, claiming that he was ready to surrender.
Following a search operation, police apprehended Meena on Thursday afternoon. Around 60 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, and over 50 villagers and police officers were injured. The incident has raised concerns about the security and fair conduct of the by-elections.
The by-elections for seven assembly seats in Rajasthan were held on Wednesday, with results expected soon. The incident at Samraavta village highlights the need for heightened security measures during future elections and underscores the importance of peaceful and democratic participation in the electoral process.
