**KATHMANDU, November 14, 2024:** Former Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, now Leader of the Opposition, has expressed concern over the strained relationship between Nepal and India, blaming the current government’s policies and its leader, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s “China card” strategy.
Dahal, popularly known as Prachanda, claims to have taken India-Nepal relations to “new heights” during his 18-month tenure, which ended abruptly in July 2024. He highlights the several agreements and understandings reached during his visits to India in 2023 and 2024, highlighting the strong foundation of their shared interests.
However, Prachanda criticizes the Oli government’s actions, particularly the upcoming visit to China without a prior visit to India, as a sign of immaturity and a deliberate attempt to play the “China card.” This, he argues, is detrimental to Nepal’s unique relationship with India, rooted in history, culture, and geography.
The tension in relations is further exacerbated by the current government’s failure to address key issues like the granting of additional overflight routes to Pokhara and Bhairahawa airports and the refusal to purchase hydropower or goods with Chinese components. Prachanda warns that these issues, including the border dispute, could be reignited due to the current government’s actions, potentially creating larger problems.
Despite his current opposition role, Prachanda reiterates his commitment to strengthening Nepal’s relationship with India. He emphasizes the need for a balanced approach, focusing on resolving outstanding issues and fostering deeper cooperation. He also expresses hope that the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), currently stalled due to India-Pakistan tensions, can be revived, with India playing a key role in bridging the divide.
