Brisbane, Australia – Australia secured a dominant 29-run victory against Pakistan in a rain-affected opening T20I at the Gabba, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The match was reduced to seven overs per side due to persistent rain and lightning delays, but the action remained intense.
Glenn Maxwell led the charge for the home side, smashing 43 runs off just 18 balls in a breathtaking cameo. He showcased his power and versatility, including a reverse scoop for four boundaries against Naseem Shah and a thunderous reverse sweep six off Shaheen Afridi. Maxwell’s onslaught was instrumental in Australia reaching a daunting 93/4 in their allotted seven overs.
Marcus Stoinis also contributed significantly, finishing the innings with two sixes and a four in the final over, ensuring Australia crossed the 90-run mark.
Pakistan’s chase never really got going. They lost their first three wickets inside the first over, with Spencer Johnson dismissing Sahibzada Farhan and Xavier Bartlett claiming Mohammad Rizwan and Usman Khan. The collapse continued as Nathan Ellis, bowling his trademark slower deliveries, dismissed Babar Azam and Irfan Khan in consecutive deliveries.
Despite a valiant effort from Abbas Afridi, who top scored with 20, Pakistan fell well short of the target, finishing at 64/9.
Bartlett and Ellis were the pick of the Australian bowlers, taking three wickets each.
This victory sets the stage for an exciting series between two of the world’s best T20I teams. Australia will be hoping to build on this momentum, while Pakistan will look to regroup and fight back in the remaining two matches.
