Thu Nov 14 06:11:25 UTC 2024: ## Karnataka High Court Orders Investigation into Website Error and Issues Notice on Breast Milk Commercialization PIL

**Bengaluru, November 14, 2024:** The Karnataka High Court has ordered an investigation into a website error that indicated a notice had been issued on a PIL petition regarding the commercialization of breast milk, despite no such order being passed. The court also issued notices to the Central and State governments on the petition, which seeks to stop private organizations from collecting, marketing, and selling breast milk.

The petition was filed by Munegowda, a resident of Bengaluru, who argued that the practice of commercializing breast milk is unethical and potentially harmful. The court heard arguments from the petitioner’s counsel and the government’s lawyer, who informed the bench that the central government had previously directed states to revoke licenses granted to private organizations treating breast milk as an Ayurvedic, Siddha, or Unani drug. However, a private entity whose license was revoked challenged the order, and the matter is pending adjudication.

The court has ordered an inquiry into how the website displayed erroneous information about the notice, and whether the petitioner played any role in the error. The Registrar-General has been tasked with leading this investigation through the Registrar (Judicial).

This case highlights concerns regarding the ethical and legal ramifications of commercializing breast milk. The High Court’s investigation and further action on this PIL will have significant implications for the future of breast milk commercialization in India.
