**Malappuram, November 13, 2024** – The by-election for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat saw a moderate turnout of 64.98% in the three Malappuram Assembly segments of Nilambur, Wandoor, and Eranad. This comes after former MP Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat in favor of his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is contesting for the United Democratic Front (UDF).
A total of 4.19 lakh voters out of 6.45 lakh cast their ballots in the three segments, with women showing a higher participation rate at 68.23% compared to 61.67% for men. While Eranad and Wandoor recorded higher voter turnout at 69.42% and 64.43% respectively, Nilambur saw a slightly lower turnout of 61.91%.
The polling process, which commenced at 7 a.m. across 595 polling stations, witnessed a slow down by midday but regained momentum in the afternoon. The by-election was conducted peacefully, with no major incidents reported.
Security was heightened in the region, with 2,500 police personnel, two companies of Central force, and three companies of the armed police battalion deployed.
The counting of votes will take place on November 23, alongside the counting for the Assembly by-elections in Palakkad and Chelakkara.
