Wed Nov 13 05:23:47 UTC 2024: ## Delhi’s “Artificial Rain” Experiment: A Hopeful but Questionable Solution to Pollution

Amidst a severe pollution crisis gripping Delhi and its surrounding areas for the past ten days, some residential societies, including DLF, have resorted to an unorthodox method: sprinkling water from the top of high-rise buildings, dubbed “artificial rain”.

The initiative, widely reported in the media, aims to mimic rain’s natural cleansing effect on air quality by utilizing firefighting systems to spray water. However, experts question the effectiveness of this approach, highlighting the limitations of artificial sprinkling compared to natural rainfall.

While rain effectively cleanses the atmosphere through scavenging and washout processes, removing pollutants temporarily, artificial systems lack the coverage and sustained exposure of natural rainfall. Moreover, rain can sometimes cause pollutants to aerosolize, potentially releasing them back into the air.

Experts further point to previous attempts by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at ITO in Delhi, which failed to achieve significant results. These failures underscore the complexity of controlling pollution in open environments, suggesting that artificial rain, despite its ingenuity, may not be the ultimate solution to Delhi’s ongoing pollution crisis.
