Tue Nov 12 07:25:47 UTC 2024: ## Tulsi Vivah 2024: Hindu Ritual Celebrates Divine Union on November 13th

The annual Hindu ritual of Tulsi Vivah, marking the divine union of the holy basil plant (Tulsi) and Lord Shaligram (a form of Lord Vishnu), will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024. This significant festival holds deep religious importance and symbolizes the beginning of the Hindu wedding season.

According to the Drik Panchang, the auspicious timings for the ritual are between 4:04 PM on November 12th and 1:01 PM on November 13th.

The legend behind Tulsi Vivah centers around Vrinda, the devoted wife of the demon king Jalandhar. Despite her husband’s evil nature, Vrinda’s purity and faith protected him from defeat. Seeking to weaken Jalandhar, the gods turned to Lord Vishnu, who deceived Vrinda, leading to her downfall. Ashamed of his actions, Vishnu vowed to honor Vrinda’s purity by rebirthing her as the sacred Tulsi plant and marrying her annually in this form.

Devotees observe Tulsi Vivah with special rituals. They bathe in the morning, decorate their puja spaces, and dress the Tulsi plant as a bride in a saree or dupatta, while Shaligram represents the groom. A priest conducts the wedding ceremony, and devotees fast until the evening, preparing offerings (bhog) for the ceremony. These offerings are later shared as prasad.

Tulsi Vivah holds special significance for Hindu culture as it represents the divine union of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, embodied by the Tulsi plant. The ritual emphasizes the belief that the virtuous and righteous are always protected by the divine. Celebrated after Devuthani Ekadashi, Tulsi Vivah also marks the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of the auspicious wedding season. Couples and those seeking marriage often perform this ritual to receive blessings for a happy and prosperous married life.
