Tue Nov 12 08:26:47 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Braces for More Heavy Rains as Low-Pressure System Looms
**Chennai, India – November 14, 2024** – Schools in Chennai remain closed today as the city endures relentless rainfall, with forecasts predicting further heavy downpours in the coming days.
A looming low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify the rains, potentially bringing up to 12 cm of rainfall to Chennai and nearby districts like Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts across Tamil Nadu, with heavy rains predicted for 17 districts through mid-November.
Chennai has already experienced a rainfall surplus since October, with 43 cm of rain recorded, exceeding normal levels by 1%. The anticipated heavy rains over the next few days could pose significant challenges for the already saturated city.
The IMD forecasts thunderstorms, scattered heavy rain, and cloudy skies for Chennai for the next two days, with temperatures expected to range between 25°C and 33°C. Coastal areas, including Puducherry, Karaikal, and stretches from Tiruvallur to Ramanathapuram, are bracing for downpours between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, with winds gusting up to 55 kmph.
Meanwhile, northern cities like Delhi and Chandigarh continue to grapple with severe air pollution, with the air quality index registering “very poor” due to low temperatures and ongoing stubble burning across the region.
