**Chennai, November 12, 2024:** Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar requesting immediate intervention to secure the release of 35 Indian fishermen apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy since November 9th.

In his letter, Mr. Stalin highlighted the distress caused to the fishermen and their families by these frequent arrests, which disrupt their livelihoods. He emphasized the alarming increase in apprehensions this year, noting that the number is the highest in the last seven years.

The latest incident involved the capture of a fishing boat from Nagapattinam with 12 fishermen on Tuesday. On November 9th, 33 fishermen from Rameswaram, along with two mechanized fishing boats and an unregistered boat, were also taken into custody.

Mr. Stalin urged the Union Minister to take immediate diplomatic steps to prevent further arrests and expedite the release of the fishermen and their boats.
