Mon Nov 11 16:16:26 UTC 2024: ## Ernakulam Police Crack Down on Illegal Sand Mining
**Kochi, November 11, 2024:** The Ernakulam Rural police have stepped up their fight against illegal sand mining, seizing four truckloads of sand allegedly mined from the Periyar river on Sunday night. The sand was discovered at three ghats – Uliyannur, Chanthakkadavu, and Kunjunnikkara – by the Aluva East police and was destined for Kollam, where it was to be sold at an exorbitant price.
This latest bust follows a month-long crackdown on illegal sand mining in the Aluva and surrounding areas, with over ten truckloads of sand and vehicles used for transportation seized. Ten individuals have also been arrested in connection with the illegal activities.
The Rural police have deployed additional police teams to intensify night patrols and conduct regular checks around the ghats to prevent further illegal mining. Individuals previously booked for illegal sand mining are also under close police observation. The public is encouraged to report any suspected illegal sand mining activities to the police.
