**Melbourne, Australia – November 11, 2024:** A male emperor penguin, nicknamed Gus, was discovered on a beach near Denmark, Australia, thousands of kilometers from its typical Antarctic habitat, sparking curiosity and concern among wildlife experts. The penguin, found on November 1st, was malnourished and weighed significantly less than a healthy adult male.
Gus’s arrival in Australia is unprecedented, as this species has never been reported in the country before. While some emperor penguins have been spotted in New Zealand, this is the first documented case in Australia.
