Mon Nov 11 21:35:52 UTC 2024: ## Tata Group Consolidates Indian Skies: Vistara Merges with Air India
**New Delhi, November 12, 2023:** In a significant move to dominate the Indian full-service carrier (FSC) market, Vistara, the joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, has been merged into Air India. The merger, announced in 2022, officially took effect yesterday.
The move aims to create a strong competitor in the global airline market and consolidate the FSC segment under the Tata Group umbrella. The integration brings together Vistara’s modern fleet of 70 aircraft and 5,500 employees with Air India’s extensive network and brand recognition.
**Flying Experience Remains Unchanged, but Merging Crew Has Sparked Discontent**
While the flying experience for passengers on Vistara’s fleet remains unchanged, the integration process has led to some turbulence within the staff. Vistara pilots are reportedly favored by new policies, leading to discontent among Air India pilots regarding promotion, salary, and duty hours.
**Loyalty Programs Merged, Credit Card Benefits Continue**
Vistara’s Club Vistara loyalty program has been merged into Air India’s Flying Returns program. All loyalty points and vouchers are being transferred to linked Flying Returns accounts. Co-branded credit card holders will continue to enjoy existing benefits until March 2026, with additional Flying Returns points and complimentary ticket vouchers added from November 12.
**Tata Group Holds Monopoly Over Full-Service Carriers**
With this merger, the Tata Group now controls the entire FSC market in India. This, combined with IndiGo’s dominance, creates a duopolistic situation where the two airlines account for 90% of the domestic market. While other business groups have expressed interest in starting new airlines, no concrete proposals for new full-service carriers are in sight.
**Potential International Success for Pinaka Missile System**
Meanwhile, India’s Pinaka MBRL, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has attracted attention from France following its successful deployment in Armenia. This multi-barrel rocket launcher boasts a range of 75 kilometers and has proven highly effective in targeting enemy positions. The French Army is currently evaluating the system, signifying a potential major milestone for India’s defence sector.
