**Zhuhai, China:** A driver has been confirmed to have killed 35 people and injured 43 others in a rampage at a sports center in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai. The attack, which occurred on Monday, saw the driver, identified as 62-year-old Fan, drive a small SUV through the gate of the Zhuhai Sports Centre and deliberately ram into people exercising on the grounds.
Police initially reported only injuries, but the death toll has since risen to 35. The 43 injured individuals are not currently in critical condition.
According to police investigations, Fan was motivated by dissatisfaction with the property division following his divorce. He was apprehended at the scene after attempting to flee. Police found him self-inflicting wounds with a knife and sent him to the hospital. He remains in a coma and is unable to be questioned.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for all-out efforts to treat the injured and demanded the perpetrator be punished according to law.
The incident has shocked Chinese social media, with many users expressing grief and concern for the affected families. The attack has also prompted a safety alert from Japan’s embassy in China, urging its citizens to be vigilant and avoid attracting attention.
This incident comes amidst a string of violent public attacks in China in recent months. In October, a man killed three and injured 15 in a knife attack at a Shanghai supermarket. In September, a Japanese schoolboy was fatally stabbed in Shenzhen, and in July, a vehicle crashed into pedestrians in Changsha, resulting in eight deaths.
The Zhuhai attack has raised concerns about public safety and the need for greater preventative measures.
