Kolkata, November 12: Renowned Bengali actor, playwright, and director Manoj Mitra passed away at a hospital here on Tuesday. He was 86.

Mitra, known for his theatrical works addressing social and political issues, succumbed to age-related ailments. He breathed his last around 8.50 am, according to family sources and medical professionals.

The actor, a prominent figure in Bengali theatre, had been hospitalized since November 3rd due to multiple health complications. His condition had been deteriorating steadily, leading to his demise.

Previously, Mitra was admitted to the hospital on September 20th due to breathing difficulties, electrolyte imbalance, and other medical issues. He was discharged in late September.

Mitra is best remembered for his performance in Tapan Sinha’s film “Bancharamer Bagan” based on his own play “Sajano Bagan.” He also featured in legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s “Ghare Baire” and “Ganashatru.”

Known for his comic and villainous roles, Mitra appeared in films by renowned directors such as Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Basu Chatterjee, Tarun Majumdar, Shakti Samanta, and Gautam Ghosh.
