Kolkata, India – Renowned Bengali actor and theatre personality, Manoj Mitra, passed away early this morning at the age of 85. Mitra, who had been battling age-related health issues for some time, was admitted to the hospital recently due to breathing difficulties and electrolyte imbalance. His condition deteriorated this morning, and he breathed his last around 8:50 am.
Born on December 22, 1938, in Dhulhiyar (then undivided Bengal), Mitra began his career in 1957 on the Kolkata theatre scene. He transitioned to the big screen in 1979 and went on to grace Bengali cinema with a plethora of memorable performances. He earned critical acclaim and fan recognition for his roles in iconic films such as “Banchharamer Bagan” by Tapan Sinha, and Satyajit Ray’s “Ghare Baire” and “Ganashatru.”
