**New Delhi:** India’s chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final have been reignited with the news that the team will play a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in August 2026.

Following a disappointing 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand, India’s path to the final became extremely difficult. However, a clean sweep of the upcoming tour of Australia could secure their qualification.

The Sri Lanka series is being seen as a crucial opportunity to give young players a chance to showcase their skills and potentially cement their place in the team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering appointing Rishabh Pant as vice-captain and Jasprit Bumrah as captain for this series.

A number of promising young talents are also expected to be included in the squad, including Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sai Sudarshan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Washington Sundar.

The potential 15-member squad for the Sri Lanka series includes: Jasprit Bumrah (Captain), Abhimanyu Easwaran, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Sai Sudarshan, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (Vice-captain & Wicketkeeper), Dhruv Jurel (Wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, and Akash Deep.

This series could be a turning point for Team India, as they aim to regroup and regain their winning momentum ahead of the crucial tour of Australia.
