Sun Nov 10 15:46:08 UTC 2024: ## Vizhinjam Port Surpasses Expectations, Handling Eight Times More Containers Than Anticipated

**Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – November 10, 2024:** The Vizhinjam International Seaport, set to be formally commissioned soon, is already exceeding expectations, handling a volume of containers far beyond initial projections. While the port was expected to handle 1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per annum in its initial phase, it has already facilitated the berthing of 23 shifts in October alone, handling over 50,000 TEUs, bringing the total container cargo throughput to 1.08 lakh TEUs.

Sources indicate that the port is on track to handle an ambitious 5 lakh TEUs this fiscal year, a significant increase from the projected 60,000 TEUs. This impressive performance is attributed to the global reach and maritime network of the Adani Group, who are developing the port. Transhipment from Vizhinjam has reached all continents except Australia, making it a major player in the global maritime business.

However, despite the port’s success, Kerala is lagging behind in developing a port-driven industrial ecosystem. The proposed Outer Area Growth Corridor (OAGC) and Outer Ring Road (ORR) project, crucial for attracting investment and facilitating trade, remain on paper. This delay is a concern, as it could potentially benefit neighboring Tamil Nadu, which has the infrastructure and resources to capitalize on the port’s growth.

The State government has committed ₹1,629.24 crore for the construction of the ORR, but officials emphasize the need for immediate action to ensure that Kerala benefits from its own ambitious port project.

The port’s success is evident in its revenue, with the exchequer receiving ₹7.4 crore from taxes generated during the trial run period. With the completion of the second berth by December, the port is poised to handle a further 0.5 lakh to 1 lakh TEUs per month, solidifying its position as a key player in the Indian maritime sector.
