Sun Nov 10 23:17:07 UTC 2024: ## Powerful Earthquakes Shake Southern Cuba, No Immediate Deaths Reported
**Havana, Cuba -** Two powerful earthquakes struck southern Cuba on Sunday, November 10, 2024, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The second and stronger tremor registered a magnitude of 6.8 and occurred approximately 25 miles off the coast of Bartolome Maso in Granma province. The first quake, measuring 5.9, struck an hour earlier.
While no deaths have been reported immediately, the tremors were felt throughout the island nation, according to the state-run newspaper Granma. Residents in Santiago de Cuba described feeling strong shaking during the first quake, prompting many to evacuate their homes.
Fortunately, the U.S. tsunami warning system has not issued any alerts. The earthquakes come as Cuba is still recovering from Hurricane Rafael, a Category 3 storm that hit the country’s west coast, leaving residents without power for two days.
This latest seismic activity follows a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Santiago de Cuba in October 2023 and a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in the Caribbean Sea in January 2020. While the 2020 earthquake was felt in several Cuban provinces, including the capital Havana, no damage was reported.
