Mon Nov 11 05:23:58 UTC 2024: ## Supreme Court Slams UP Government for Demolishing House Without Notice, Orders ₹25 Lakh Compensation
The Supreme Court of India has expressed strong disapproval towards the Uttar Pradesh government for demolishing a resident’s house without providing any prior notice. The court ordered the authorities to pay ₹25 lakh compensation to the affected individual.
The incident occurred in 2019, when officials demolished the house of Manoj Tibrewal, a resident of Maharajganj, as part of a road expansion project. The demolition was carried out without any prior notice or opportunity for the homeowner to vacate his property.
The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, found the actions of the UP government to be “unjust” and “unacceptable.” The court criticized the use of a sound speaker to inform the homeowner about the demolition, deeming it inadequate and unfair.
The court ordered the government to investigate the officials and contractors responsible for the demolition and initiate disciplinary action against them. The court also stressed the need for a fair and transparent process when dealing with such matters and emphasized the importance of ensuring that affected individuals are provided with adequate notice and an opportunity to be heard.
