Mon Nov 11 13:41:50 UTC 2024: ## Udhagamandalam School’s Overcrowding Leads to Road Blockade
**UDHAGAMANDALAM, November 11, 2024:** Parents and students of Solada Government Middle School near Udhagamandalam disrupted traffic on the Udhagamandalam-Masinagudi Road for over two hours on Monday, demanding the construction of additional classrooms.
The protest was sparked by the school’s overcrowding, with approximately 90 students crammed into existing, dilapidated classrooms. This, according to parents, is hindering quality education and jeopardizing the students’ learning environment.
Parents, who represent students from Solada, Kalhatti, and surrounding villages, have repeatedly appealed to the Nilgiris district administration and the School Education Department for improved facilities, including new classrooms. However, their pleas have gone unanswered, forcing them to take this drastic action.
Traffic on the busy route was brought to a standstill, with police diverting vehicles towards Gudalur until the protesters dispersed. Revenue Department officials eventually met with the parents and convinced them to call off the demonstration.
This incident highlights the pressing need for infrastructure upgrades in rural schools. The lack of proper facilities not only affects students’ educational opportunities but also poses safety concerns. The authorities must address the school’s concerns and ensure that all students have access to quality education.
