Amsterdam police have taken a unique approach to solving the 15-year-old cold case of murdered sex worker Bernadett Betty Szabo, using a life-size hologram of the victim. The innovative tactic, approved by Szabo’s family, aims to jog people’s memories and ultimately catch her killer.
The hologram, positioned behind a window, appears to interact with passersby, knocking on the glass and seemingly breathing on it to create condensation with the word “help” appearing. This emotional display is intended to create a connection with the victim and encourage potential witnesses to come forward.
Szabo, a 19-year-old Hungarian woman, was found murdered in her Amsterdam workplace in 2009, stabbed multiple times. Her son, born just months before her death, was placed in foster care. Despite an initial investigation, the case went cold.
Police have now launched a “final attempt” to solve the case, deploying the hologram alongside large posters, stickers and television screens displaying information about the case throughout the city’s Red Light District. The reward for information has also been increased to $32,000.
“It is difficult to determine what it takes to get possible witnesses to share their information with us,” admitted Benjamin van Gogh, coordinator of the Amsterdam Wanted and Missing Persons Team. “Betty’s hologram may create a certain connection with her and thus convince a person to come forward. In this type of case, we always try to put a face on a victim, so that informants know who they’re doing it for, and the hologram is a way of taking this a step further,” he added.
