**New Delhi, November 11, 2024:** Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday, succeeding Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who retired on November 10. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath during a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The event was attended by key dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, highlighting the significance of the occasion for India’s judiciary.

Justice Khanna’s appointment, which was recommended by his predecessor on October 17 and officially notified by the government on October 24, will last until May 13, 2025.

In his farewell address, Justice Chandrachud expressed confidence in Justice Khanna’s leadership, praising him as “dignified, stable, and deeply committed to justice.”

Justice Khanna’s appointment signifies a new chapter in India’s judicial leadership. He will preside over the Supreme Court until his retirement in May 2025, overseeing a range of critical cases and legal issues.
