England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, has revealed his anxieties surrounding his leadership role following the team’s disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in June. After failing to defend their title in the Americas, Buttler admitted fearing the same fate as former head coach Matthew Mott, who was sacked by the ECB.
However, despite the team’s struggles, ECB Director of Cricket Robert Key retained Buttler as captain, believing in his ability to lead the team into the future. Buttler expressed his commitment to the role, stating that he wants to be the captain because he’s “the right person to do it,” and not just because he’s available.
A recent calf injury provided Buttler with a new perspective on his cricketing future. He has committed to playing on to develop the next generation of white-ball players, although he remains coy about how long he intends to play.
Buttler is set to return to the England T20I side for the upcoming series against the West Indies, beginning on Saturday, November 9th. However, he will not be keeping wicket, with Phil Salt continuing in that role for the five-match series.
