**Tokyo, November 11, 2024:** Shigeru Ishiba has been re-elected as Japan’s Prime Minister, despite his governing coalition suffering the worst election loss in over a decade. Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior partner Komeito lost their majority in the Lower House of Parliament in the October 27 election, driven by voter anger over financial misconduct and a perceived lack of response to their concerns.
Despite the setback, Ishiba was re-elected in a special parliamentary session on Monday, securing a 221-160 victory over top opposition leader Yoshihiko Noda. This marks the first runoff in 30 years.
Ishiba faces challenges ahead. He will need to secure support from the opposition for policies such as the budget and legislation, and will also have to replace three Cabinet members who lost their seats or were affected by the election results. He has ruled out stepping down, emphasizing his desire to work with coalition partners for stability and policy implementation.
The opposition landscape is also volatile. While Noda seeks to form an opposition coalition, he has yet to succeed. A rising conservative force, the Democratic Party for the People, led by Yuichiro Tamaki, has quadrupled its seats to 28, attracting younger voters and low-income earners with policies like raising the basic tax-free income allowance and increasing take-home wages. However, Tamaki has only offered policy cooperation, not coalition membership, with Ishiba’s party.
Adding to the uncertainty, a recent magazine article revealed Tamaki’s extramarital affair, which he admitted to on Monday.
Despite these challenges, Ishiba’s government is gearing up for upcoming events, including his trip to ASEAN and G20 summits later this month, and a potential meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on his return.
