**Bhubaneswar, November 11, 2024:** A ‘chariot parade’ organized by ISKCON in Houston, featuring a replica of Lord Jagannath’s ‘Nandighosa’ chariot without the deities, has sparked controversy and anger in Odisha. The event, held on November 9th as part of ISKCON’s ‘Festival of Bliss’, has been condemned by devotees and authorities in the state.
Despite assuring the Odisha government and Puri’s Gajapati Maharaja that it would not hold an untimely Rath Yatra outside India, ISKCON proceeded with the parade, triggering a strong backlash. Puri Govardhan Peeth spokesperson Matru Prasad Mishra called the event a “conspiracy against our religion” and demanded a ban on ISKCON in India.
Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration in Puri will take a decision on the matter and the State government will support their action.
In a statement, Houston ISKCON chief Saranga Thakur Dasa explained that the temple had initially planned to include the deities in the parade but made a change due to concerns raised by local community members.
However, the explanation has not appeased critics, who see the event as a violation of tradition and a disrespect to the sanctity of the Rath Yatra. A meeting is scheduled next month between ISKCON and Puri officials to discuss the issue and reach a mutual agreement.
