**Chennai:** BJP state spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad has criticized the Tamil Development Department’s upcoming speech competition celebrating the birthday of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. While acknowledging Nehru’s contributions, Prasad argued that India’s history is rich with diverse leaders who deserve recognition, including freedom fighters like Mahakavi Bharathiyar, V.U. Chidambaranar, Subramania Siva, Subramania Bharathi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Subhash Chandra Bose, Babasaheb Ambedkar, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Prasad emphasized that India’s independence struggle and subsequent development were shaped by a wide spectrum of leaders, not just the Nehru family. He pointed out that the Congress party became dominated by the Nehru family after the deaths of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, stifling the emergence of opposing parties and influencing Indian politics for over five decades.
He expressed concern that the DMK, following Congress’s legacy, might repeat the same trend of focusing on a select few leaders, especially after naming state projects and buildings after former Chief Minister Karunanidhi in the pretext of his centenary celebrations. Prasad warned that altering history could have unintended consequences, and urged the DMK government to acknowledge the contributions of all leaders, fostering a comprehensive understanding of India’s diverse political heritage among students.
Prasad advocated for inclusive speech and essay competitions celebrating the birthdays and memorial days of a wider range of national leaders, encouraging students to learn from their experiences and ideals. This, he believes, will promote a more inclusive understanding of India’s history and inspire future generations to work towards the nation’s progress.
