**Gqeberha, South Africa:** Varun Chakaravarthy, the Indian mystery spinner, delivered a memorable performance in the second T20I against South Africa on Sunday, claiming his maiden five-wicket haul. He became only the fifth Indian bowler to achieve this feat, but his effort was unfortunately overshadowed by India’s loss, making it the first time India lost a T20I despite a five-wicket haul from one of their bowlers.
Chakaravarthy’s spell, where he picked up five wickets for a mere 17 runs in his four overs, was particularly impressive considering India were defending a modest score of 124. However, South Africa chased down the target with an over and three wickets to spare.
In a bittersweet turn of events, Chakaravarthy also set an unwanted world record. His figures became the best by a full-member nation team in a losing T20I match, surpassing the previous record held jointly by Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh and Matt Short of Australia.
Despite the loss, India remains locked in a 1-1 tie with South Africa in the four-match series. The third T20I, scheduled for November 13 at SuperSport Park in Centurion, will be a crucial encounter as the winning team will secure an unassailable lead in the series.
