**Bhopal:** In a shocking incident, a businessman in Bhopal was rescued from a cyber-fraud scheme where he was falsely “arrested” online.
On Saturday, Vivek Oberoi, a resident of Arera Colony, received a call from individuals claiming to be from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The scammers then connected him to fake CBI and Mumbai crime branch officials who accused him of having multiple bogus bank accounts opened using his Aadhaar card. They alleged that his Aadhaar was also used for purchasing SIM cards for unsolicited marketing.
This is a common technique used by cyber criminals known as “digital arrest” where they impersonate law enforcement to intimidate and extort money from victims.
Oberoi, believing he was under arrest, was instructed to download the Skype video app and remain in a room. However, he had the presence of mind to alert the Madhya Pradesh cyber police.
Officers arrived at his home during this “digital arrest” and demanded identification from the fake law enforcement officials. The fraudsters immediately disconnected the video call.
While the scammers had obtained Oberoi’s bank details, he fortunately did not transfer any money.
The timely intervention of the MP cyber police prevented a potential financial loss for Oberoi and exposed the “digital arrest” scam. Police are now investigating the case and urging citizens to remain vigilant against such cyber crimes.
