**Puducherry, November 10, 2024:** The AIADMK secretary, A. Anbalagan, has expressed serious concerns about the rising crime rates and alleged illegal activities in Puducherry, claiming the Union Territory is becoming a “den of decadence and crime”. He cautioned the government against prioritizing tourism revenue at the expense of public safety and law enforcement.
In a press conference today, Mr. Anbalagan highlighted a perceived weakening of public trust in the police force, citing a tendency among some officers to “turn a blind eye” to government policies. He specifically criticized the “indiscriminate” opening of spas, massage parlours, resto bars, and night clubs, which he alleges have contributed to an increase in illegal activities, including drug trafficking.
The AIADMK leader did, however, commend the recent initiative by the new Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order), R. Kalaivanan, to review the law and order situation and crack down on criminal activities, including the arrest of illegal lottery sellers. Mr. Anbalagan cited this as an example of the positive outcomes achievable when law enforcement officers act with intent.
His statement highlights the growing concerns over public safety in Puducherry and demands greater attention from the government to address the alleged rise in crime and illegal activities.
