Mon Nov 11 13:53:24 UTC 2024: ## Residents Fear Flooding As Deepened Pond in Tiruchi Overflows

**Tiruchi, November 11, 2024:** Residents of Morais Garden Extension, Phase 3, in Runway Nagar, Tiruchi, are expressing concerns over the safety of their homes following the recent deepening of a pond near the Kaliamman Koil temple in Ward 46. The pond, now filled with rainwater, lacks a proper bund on the side closest to the residential area, leading to fears of flooding.

“The pond is missing a bund on our side, leaving us with only our compound wall for protection, which is worrisome,” said a concerned resident. They emphasize the need for a proper outlet channel to safely drain excess water.

The pond, originally used for irrigation, has become a focal point for flooding concerns due to new residential developments in the area. P. Raja, Ponmalai Unit Secretary of the Communist Party of India, urges authorities to maintain the pond with proper infrastructure, conduct a thorough study of potential encroachments, and establish a clear pathway for water flow.

Ward Councillor K. Ramesh clarified that the pond was initially deepened to prevent water from flowing into nearby residential areas. He added that plans are underway to create a separate outlet through MGR Nagar as some older channels appear to have been encroached upon.

A junior engineer from the area confirmed that a survey has been conducted and plans for the construction of an outlet channel are being finalized after discussions with residents of Wards 46 and 47. The construction is expected to begin soon, benefiting both wards.

A senior Corporation official has assured the residents that a detailed project report for the construction of a safety wall around the pond has been submitted and is currently awaiting administrative approval. Once approved, the construction will begin, offering residents much-needed protection from potential overflows.
