Mon Nov 11 14:36:34 UTC 2024: ## 11 Suspected Kuki Insurgents Killed in Manipur Encounter, One CRPF Soldier Injured

**Jiribam, Manipur:** An intense encounter between security forces and suspected Kuki insurgents in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Monday resulted in the death of 11 insurgents. The encounter, which began with an attack on a police station and a nearby relief camp, also left one CRPF soldier injured.

The attack unfolded in the afternoon when suspected Kuki insurgents, arriving in autorickshaws, launched a coordinated assault on the Borobekra police station. The insurgents reportedly targeted the nearby relief camp, which houses internally displaced people, as well.

Following the attack, the insurgents moved towards a small settlement in Jakurador Karong, setting houses on fire and engaging in a gunfight with security forces. The security forces retaliated, leading to the deaths of 11 insurgents. Weapons recovered from the site included rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and AK series assault rifles.

The CRPF soldier injured in the encounter was evacuated to Silchar Medical College in Assam.

The incident comes amidst heightened tension in Jiribam, following a recent wave of violence. Last week, a woman from the Hmar tribe was killed and her house set on fire by suspected Meitei insurgents. A day later, a woman from the Meitei community was shot dead by suspected Kuki insurgents. Earlier Monday, suspected Kuki insurgents fired upon a farmer in Imphal East District, leaving him injured.

Kuki civil society groups have called for a shutdown in areas under their control in response to the deaths of individuals they claim were village volunteers.

The CRPF has sent reinforcements to Jiribam to maintain security and control the situation. The incident underscores the ongoing conflict between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur, which has led to widespread displacement and violence.
