Mon Nov 11 11:43:31 UTC 2024: ## Escaped Monkeys Remain at Large Near South Carolina Research Facility

**Yemassee, SC** – One of 43 Rhesus macaques that escaped from a research facility in South Carolina has been recovered, but many remain at large, officials said Saturday.

The monkeys escaped from the Alpha Genesis facility on Wednesday after an employee failed to fully lock a door while tending to the animals. While one monkey has been safely returned, the remaining primates have been observed interacting with their companions inside the facility, offering a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution.

The monkeys, all female and weighing around 7 pounds, are about the size of a cat. They have been seen exploring the outer fence of the compound and are considered a low risk to public health.

Alpha Genesis, a facility that breeds monkeys for medical and other research, is working with federal health officials and local police to recover the escaped animals. CEO Greg Westergaard has assured the public that efforts to reunite all the monkeys will continue throughout the weekend and for as long as it takes.
