Mon Nov 11 08:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Japan’s PM Ishiba Resigns, Triggers Second Round of Prime Ministerial Election

**Tokyo, Japan** – Japanese Prime Minister **Taro Aso** and his cabinet resigned on Monday, triggering a second round of prime ministerial election, a scenario unseen in Japan for 30 years. The resignation comes just over a month after Aso took office, following the inconclusive results of the recent House of Representatives election where no single party secured a majority.

The election is now expected to be a showdown between **Taro Aso**, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and **Yoshihiko Noda**, the head of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP). With the opposition parties failing to coalesce, the LDP and Komeito Party are expected to secure enough votes to ensure Aso’s re-election in the second round.

This will mark the fifth time in postwar Japan that a prime minister has been elected through a second round of voting. Aso is scheduled to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru this week and the G20 summit in Brazil next week. Japanese government officials are aiming to arrange a meeting between Aso and US President Donald Trump, possibly during a stopover in the US before his return to Japan.

This week’s economic calendar is packed with crucial data releases. Investors will be watching the US Consumer Price Index (CPI), GDP figures from Europe, Japan, and the UK, and industrial production and retail sales data from China.
