**WASHINGTON** – The Republican victory in the midterm elections has triggered a three-way race to replace Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is stepping down at the end of the year.

Senator Rick Scott, a conservative from Florida and a Trump loyalist, is vying for the top spot, despite losing to McConnell in a similar leadership challenge two years ago. Scott has been actively courting support from fellow Republicans and has even sought an endorsement from former President Trump.

However, Scott faces stiff competition from two seasoned Republican leaders: Senator John Thune of South Dakota and Senator John Cornyn of Texas. Both Thune and Cornyn have long-standing relationships within the GOP Conference and are seen as the frontrunners. They have worked to mend their past differences with Trump, recognizing his influential position within the party.

Despite Trump’s potential influence, the leadership election is a secret ballot, meaning individual senators’ votes remain confidential. To win, a candidate needs a simple majority. If no candidate secures it on the first ballot, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and the race goes to a head-to-head contest between the remaining two.

The new Senate leadership will be chosen next week, with a forum scheduled for Tuesday and the official election taking place on Wednesday. Senator Mike Lee of Utah will host the forum, which will include the three candidates and newly elected senators.

While Trump has yet to publicly endorse any candidate, Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has urged him to throw his support behind Scott, highlighting his conservative credentials and his ability to work with the former president on his agenda.

Senator Thune, meanwhile, has urged Trump to stay out of the internal race, suggesting it would be best left to senators themselves. He acknowledged Trump’s potential influence but emphasized that the new Senate leader will need to work with all members, regardless of their political leanings.

Thune, along with Cornyn, has been actively campaigning for the leadership position, emphasizing their experience and relationships within the GOP. Both have worked to bridge the divide between the more moderate wing of the party and the MAGA faction, which has gained significant influence following Trump’s reemergence.

This leadership contest is expected to be closely watched, as it will determine the direction of the Republican party and its ability to advance Trump’s agenda in the Senate.
