New Delhi, October 10, 2024 – In a heartfelt farewell address, outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud shared deeply personal reflections on his illustrious career and the enduring legacy of his father, the late Justice YV Chandrachud, India’s longest-serving chief justice.
CJI Chandrachud recounted his father’s advice to preserve a small Pune flat until the conclusion of his judicial tenure, emphasizing the importance of maintaining moral and intellectual integrity. “He said, if you feel that your moral integrity or your intellectual integrity is ever compromised, I want you to know that you have a roof over your head. Never allow yourself to be compromised,” recalled the CJI.
The outgoing CJI also acknowledged the challenges of being in the public eye, stating, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.” He reflected on how exposing his life to scrutiny had invited criticism, particularly in the age of social media. He expressed gratitude for the support received from the bar, acknowledging the various initiatives undertaken during his tenure.
CJI Chandrachud also shared the meaning behind his name, “Dhananjay”, which his mother had explained to him as emphasizing “knowledge” rather than material wealth. “I want you to acquire knowledge,” she had told him.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) organized a ceremonial farewell for the outgoing CJI. Justice Sanjiv Khanna, set to succeed CJI Chandrachud on November 11, remarked on the profound impact of Justice Chandrachud’s departure.
Born on November 11, 1959, Justice Chandrachud has had a distinguished legal career, serving as the additional solicitor general and later as a judge of the Bombay High Court. He rose to the position of chief justice of the Allahabad High Court in October 2013 and is recognized for his academic achievements, holding degrees from prestigious institutions, including Harvard Law School.
