Sat Nov 09 19:58:00 UTC 2024: ## Netanyahu Fires Defence Minister Gallant Amidst Gaza War, Replacing Him With Loyal Ally

**Tel Aviv, November 10, 2024:** Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again sparked controversy by firing Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, replacing him with Foreign Minister Israel Katz. This comes just a week after Mr. Gallant advocated for the military conscription of ultra-Orthodox Jews, a move that threatened to destabilize Mr. Netanyahu’s coalition.

The decision, which was made on November 6th, coinciding with the U.S. presidential elections, has been met with protests in Tel Aviv and other parts of Israel. Citizens gathered in what they dubbed “Gallant Night II”, echoing the mass protests that erupted in 2023 after Mr. Gallant’s initial firing.

Mr. Gallant, a respected military figure with 35 years of experience, was seen as a moderate voice within the government, having maintained close communication with U.S. Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, particularly during the ongoing Gaza war.

Mr. Gallant cited three key reasons for his dismissal: his belief in the possibility of a deal with Hamas that would secure the release of hostages, his steadfast support for the military conscription of ultra-Orthodox Jews, and his demand for an inquiry into the security failures that allowed Hamas’s October 7th attack.

Mr. Netanyahu’s decision is seen as a strategic move to bolster his coalition and secure the support of right-wing parties. Replacing Mr. Gallant with Mr. Katz, a long-time ally with little military experience, ensures greater loyalty to the Prime Minister.

Mr. Katz’s appointment comes at a critical time for Israel, as it faces a multi-front war with Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and anticipates an Iranian response to Israel’s attack on October 26th.

While Mr. Katz’s political allegiance to Mr. Netanyahu is undeniable, his lack of military experience raises concerns about his ability to navigate the complex and volatile security situation facing Israel.
