Sat Nov 09 20:24:10 UTC 2024: ## Canada Scraps Fast-Track Study Permit Program, Leaving International Students Facing Longer Wait Times
**OTTAWA, CANADA** – Canada has abruptly ended its popular Student Direct Stream (SDS) program, effective November 8, 2024, leaving international students facing longer wait times and tougher eligibility requirements.
The SDS program, launched in 2018, offered a streamlined path to study permits for students from 14 countries, including India, China, and the Philippines, who met specific requirements like a Canadian Guaranteed Investment Certificate and language proficiency tests. This allowed successful applicants to receive their permits within weeks, compared to the standard processing time of around eight weeks for Indian applicants.
The decision to terminate SDS reflects Canada’s efforts to control its international student population amid growing pressures on housing and resources. The government has set a cap of 437,000 new study permits for 2025, covering all levels of education. Further tightening measures include stricter language and academic benchmarks for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), limitations on work permits for spouses of international students, and increased financial requirements.
While Canada hosted a record 807,000 study permit holders in 2023, the government is seeking to balance the benefits of its international education sector with the need to alleviate pressures on housing and services.
International students are now advised to begin their visa planning well in advance to navigate the more restrictive landscape.
