Sun Nov 10 13:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Secure Series Lead with Thrilling Win Over New Zealand
**Dambulla, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lanka took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand with a thrilling four-wicket victory at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Tuesday.
The hosts were indebted to an unbeaten 35 from captain Charith Asalanka, who powered Sri Lanka home in a tricky chase. Earlier, Sri Lankan spinners combined effectively to restrict New Zealand to a modest 135/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Dunith Wellalage led the charge, picking up 3-20, while Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana claimed two wickets each. New Zealand’s innings was punctuated by a 39-run stand between Zakary Foulkes (27*) and Ish Sodhi, which helped them reach a respectable total.
The chase began poorly for Sri Lanka, with Kusal Mendis falling early. However, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera put on a quickfire 38-run stand to give their side momentum. The introduction of Foulkes brought a change in fortunes, as he dismissed Nissanka and Perera to leave Sri Lanka at 55/3.
Asalanka then took control, smashing two sixes to bring the required run-rate down. However, the momentum swung once again when Glenn Phillips dismissed Kamindu Mendis and Foulkes removed Bhanuka Rajapaksa in quick succession.
With the score at 96/5, Asalanka and Hasaranga steadied the ship with a crucial partnership. Though Hasaranga fell for 22, Asalanka continued his valiant knock, bringing Sri Lanka within touching distance of victory.
Wellalage finished the chase in style, smashing a four and a six in the penultimate over to seal a thrilling win for the hosts.
The series continues on Friday with the second T20I, also in Dambulla.
