**New Delhi:** Kalpana Das Chandrachud, wife of outgoing Supreme Court Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, shared her unique childhood experience in Kerala, highlighting the absence of religious and caste divides during her formative years.
Growing up in Kasaragod district, Kalpana Das, the daughter of a scientist, celebrated Eid, Onam, and Christmas with friends from diverse religious backgrounds. She describes her childhood as enriched by this inclusive environment, where religious celebrations were shared and celebrated together.
“It was a time when there were no discussions of religion or caste,” Kalpana Das said. “I celebrated Eid, Onam, and Christmas with friends from various religious backgrounds.”
This experience, she believes, shaped her worldview, fostering a sense of acceptance and understanding.
In a separate anecdote, Chief Justice Chandrachud shared that his wife agreed to marry him only after he assured her she could wear only a wedding ring and no other jewellery.
The couple, who are both vegetarians, have two adopted children with special needs, Priyanka and Mahiya, in addition to the Chief Justice’s two sons from his previous marriage.
The Chief Justice also described his wife as his closest friend and a strong supporter in all aspects of his life.
